Cardinal offers both high-speed and slow-speed in-motion vehicle scales designed to measure and record a passing truck's axle weights, total weights, axle spacing and speed. These in-motion vehicle scales are available with either quartz-piezoelectric sensors or strain gauge load cells. The quartz-piezoelectric sensors offer easy installation with a minimum of pavement disruption and can be used for both slow and high-speed applications. Multiple permanently mounted sensors may be used to increase the performance of the scale.
Strain gauge load cell type in-motion scales require greater site preparation and longer installation times but offer excellent slow to intermediate speed performance and, unlike the quartz-piezoelectric sensors, can even be used to weigh static loads. These in-motion scales consist of two platforms each supported by four 50,000 pound stainless steel compression load cells giving them the ability to withstand extreme loading.
A variety of instrumentation is available. Instruments are capable of assigning the passing vehicle into a pre-determined vehicle classification, communicating with an AVI (automatic vehicle identification) system to determine if the truck must enter a highway
weighstation, and operating traffic lights and variable message signs to direct the truck to a static scale or back to the highway. All Cardinal in-motion vehicle scales meet ASTM 1318E requirements for Types 3 and 4 applications.
